Deacon has an ugly history, a history that broke him, leaving him a ghost of a man. Out of necessity, he left the normal world to descend into the criminal world and found he fit. So he stayed. Cold as ice and living off the grid, Deacon has no intention to connect, not with anyone.

Then he returns to some remote cabins in the Colorado Mountains and finds they have new owners. One of them is Cassidy Swallow, a young woman willing to work hard to live her quiet dream in a house by a river surrounded by aspen and pine.

Suddenly, Deacon finds he’s at war. Cassidy’s pull for him to connect is strong. He fights it, but he loses, always coming back for more. But when he does, he gives her nothing.

From the first time she sees him, Cassidy knows Deacon is dead inside. She knows he’s the kind of man who could destroy a woman. But one night when Deacon’s control slips, Cassidy takes a chance.

He might break her. He also might be her dream come true.

Well, hot damn! Our man, Deacon, is a FRREEEAAAAKKKK!!!

But first things first...
Kristen Ashley fans know that her books typically stick to somewhat of a formula. If you don't know what I mean by that, then you probably haven't read enough of her books. (So get on that.) I happen to be a reader that LOVES that formula, loves that I know what I'm getting in every one of her books, even though they're all undeniably different. Deacon broke that mold though, in my opinion. Deacon felt different from the very start. It doesn't fit in the box many of Ashley's other books do. And that definitely worked for me too. It's unpredictable. I read chapter upon chapter and I was nervous, waiting, expecting, wondering if or when the bottom would drop out. I love that uncertainty, that angst, that knot in my stomach.

Cassidy is immediately likable. She's stunning. She's an independent entrepreneur who isn't afraid of being alone, of speaking her mind, of being herself. She doesn't need protecting, she doesn't need a man. She was raised by good, strong people who made sure she knew exactly what she's worth and she's not the type of woman to stay with a man who doesn't recognize it. Deacon, on the other hand, is not immediately likable. He's actually kind of scary. Intimidating. Perfect in that mysterious way that makes you want to KNOW him. Makes you want to GET him, and understand completely why he's holed himself up in the cabins Cassidy owns at the most random times, there one minute, gone the next, unwilling to let anyone close. Their dynamic is absorbing. It builds and builds in that perfect way that only Kristen Ashley can do. But better. The build and the angst and the chemistry in Deacon is BETTER.

I love the way Kristen Ashley pens the dialogue of her alpha males. Love. It. Most often her stories are rife with chatty women, who amuse these men with their endless musings and witty antics. But the men are men. They don't say much, but what they do say is perfect. Genuine. Real. They say as few words as possible, as few words as you'd expect an alpha broody male to say. But it just feels so right. So real. So authentic. I live for a book that feels realistic and all too often books are overwrought with flowery dialogue that you know damn well no man would take the time to actually say. At least not a badass alpha male of the Kristen Ashley kind. Deacon is exactly that. A man of few words, but those few words are perfectly placed. Rumbly. Dark. Perfect. Kristen Ashley NAILS male dialogue and she has me drooling and groveling for more. Every. Single.Time.

This book is definitely more smutty than any Kristen Ashley book in recent memory. No doubt, all of her books are heavy on the steam, but Deacon takes things to a whole other level. The dirty talk: HOT. The sexy time: HOTTER. This book crosses over that line from hot and sexy to hot, sexy and really kinky. But it's not cliche BDSM kinky. It's Kristen Ashley alpha male kinky which is way better. It doesn't feel like kink for the sake of kink. It's all very fluid, very Deacon and Cassidy. It works so perfectly and consistently with ever other facet of this building relationship between these characters. It just works. Like everything else these two people have been missing in their lives, they find the sexual compatibility in each other that they'd never found with anyone else. The chemistry. The Vanilla. The not-so-Vanilla. The so-far-from-Vanilla-we-forgot-Vanilla-was-a-thing. The emotional connection. They fit together like two puzzle pieces. They just work. It's perfect.

Deacon is going down as one of my favorite Kristen Ashley books EVER. That list is long, but whatever. Deacon is the man. He's messed up. He's broken. He's badass. He's hot. He's everything I love in a Kristen Ashley leading man and a whole lot I didn't even know I wanted. Cassidy is one of my top favorite KA ladies, officially. The two together make for a perfectly, layered, well-developed, delicious story line that must be read again and again.

3.5 Beautiful war stars

This is when I really wish had half stars. Because this book really is a strong 3.5 and not a 4 for me. But I wouldn't lower it to a 3. So I'll make do.

At the age of twenty four Cassidy took out a loan and bought a small smattering of 11 run down cabins in the Colorado Mountains. This story takes place over the next 6-8 years and while Cassidy is slowly fixing up the place, she has one returning customer, and that's the brooding and mysterious John Priest. He's gruff, doesn't speak much, and a little bit rude. But there's a draw between John and Cassidy, and over the years as he keeps coming back to Glacier Lily (the name of the cabins), the two begin to give in.

Cassidy knew from the first moment she saw him he was dead inside, she just didn't know how far gone he really was. Can Cassidy save him from himself? Or will he break her in the process?

I enjoyed this book I really did, but being The Queen of romance that Kristen Ashley is, this series is not my favorite by her. Yes, it's a little darker and has a lot more kinky sex, but her usual depth was missing for me with this one. Maybe because the plot was so centralized around these two characters? All in all this book is a great example of same formula and different character names with more kinky sex.

Plus, those of you who know me well know my golden rule You mess up, then you'd better grovel. And I'm sorry but in my honest opinion, Deacon was forgiven for his actions WAY too easily. I understand how messed up he was and why, and he did his best to mend fences, but I lose all respect for the main female characters when they just give in and take a dude back. To me it makes them a little bit more of a doormat.

“You’re a vulnerability,” he ground out. “My vulnerability. I have no vulnerabilities. I spent years shavin’ every last one away from me so there was nothin’ left. Now I got one, a big one."

Not to go on about what I didn't like so here are some positives I love stories about messed up men. Cassidy didn't fix Deacon all by herself but she led him on the path back to a good life and back to being the good man he once was. Cassidy worked her ass off to succeed and she earned every little bit of success that came her way. I find that admirable. We as readers got to see her grow over the years, she just wasn't magically successful like some women in romance novels who pop out of college a ruthless business woman making millions. So nice to read about a hardworking woman.

So overall, I think KA fans who loved Knight would love this one. Being as Knight wasn't my cup of tea, I wasn't in love with this book either. But honestly, (in a not so eloquent phrasing) Kristen Ashley books are like chocolate, even if it's not the best or the most gourmet, it's still enjoyable and fun to consume.

“It's a beautiful war, baby." He dipped so close, the tips of our noses brushed but his eyes never left mine. "And I...just… won.”
